The terminal application for te desktop,
you'll want to set your Default profile to treat each session as a
login shell
under GnomeTerminal it's Edit>Current Profile>[Title and Command] tab
and set the checkbox for 'run command as login shell'
I don't have KDE handy but it's pretty similar.
Under OSX it's Terminal>Preferences then set the check box for run
command as login shell.
most of these settings are stored in a dotfile that you can edit
directly if you absolutely have to (OSX and Gnome both use XML)
