[Eug-lug] mysql SUPER privilege

mysqladmin: Can't turn off logging; error: 'Access denied; you
need the SUPER privilege for this operation'

I'm trying to set my root password for mysql and getting that.
Google turns up a few results but nothing I've read so far gives
the answer. 

FWIW, it's Gentoo and MySQL 5.0.54.
