The only people not dreaming of free wireless internet access are the ones profiting from the current extortionist business model. As to the impact on society? I think the equivalent would be something akin to? the invention of the automobile (the full impact and evolution of which we have yet to fully realize).

Having gone through the wringer of High Speed setup, I would be all for a localized network.
