Alan,
    Thanks. I think you got me close enough. The default, according to 
he lying man page is supposed to be 5 mins. Obviously not. So then I 
checked sysconfig/autofs. A 60 second default timeout.. Sigh. Something 
so friggin stupid... How did I miss that?!?!?
