Gentoo is a Linux distribution. It is extremely novice-hostile. It's
unusual in that it's usually installed from source. The end user
downloads source tarballs for most/all of the system and builds it
himself.
I ran Gentoo on my desktop and laptop for about three years, ending in
2006. At Gentoo's peak, I'd only recommend it to geeks who really
want to spend a *lot* of time learning Linux in depth. Today, the
project appears to be in decline/disarray, and I wouldn't recommend it
to anyone.
Gentoo Linux is named for the Gentoo penguin.

The exact origin of the name Gentoo is unclear. It was used
during the 18th century by both British and Portuguese
(originating in the latter case from gentile) to refer to
various ethnic groups, notably as a derogatory term for
Hindus. It has been speculated that the characteristic white
spot of the Gentoo penguin may have been seen as similar to
a turban.[citation needed]
