check out unison
http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~bcpierce/unison/
it's available as a package on Ubuntu, and binaries are available for
Windows and OSX
it's sort of like a bidirectional rsync, I use it for keeping my
laptop, desktop and server in step for certain things.
