[Eug-lug] EWEB Position on Linux systems

I wasn't sure if anyone was interested I'll try to post more detailed
stuff tomorrow after talking to my boss. The posting closes Friday.

What I know I can tell you all -

I have been doing security for EWEB for the past 4 years. And did
security at Lane County's Regional Information Systems prior to that.
There is too much work for me to handle at EWEB. Also, my position is
salaried, so I don't get overtime for working long hours or weekends.
While I have donated time here and there, with a wife and 5 kids its
definitely not my preference. The new position however is non-exempt,
so it will get the first opportunity to do weekend work and on-call
stuff. EWEB pays double-time for overtime btw.

What I can suggest right off the bat to anyone thinking of applying is
you provide EVERYTHING YOU CAN THINK OF ON THE APP. HR in any company
usually knows little about computer systems, and they will score the
first round.. so you get points for everything you list that you have
done ( its got to be truthful, they will often check ) SO if you got a
computer badge in Boy Scouts... list that.. you may get points for it.

Duplicate everything from your resume onto the app. Yes its redundant
and a pain, but thats the way they want it. I cant tell you how many
hiring committee's I've been at various jobs where a person I knew was
qualified for the job didn't make it past HR simply cause they didn't
put effort into the app and thought the attached resume would suffice..

.. there was one case where the person got past HR and I knew they could
do a good job and I said, "hey we should look at this person" .. and the
team looked at what he had submitted and said.. why ? .. and I had to
agree.. there was no pertinent info on the app. SO list everything you
can think of and attach pages to the back if need be. Once I saw an app
with 60 pages.. that guy got the job.

That being siad.. especially when I worked at LC RIS, which is a windows
shop with a fairly high turnover ( a great stepping stone place to work
though - its a huge data center ) .. I sat on 20 or so hiring
committees and the process really is a crap shoot. Sometimes you get 10
people who are all overqualified, and sometimes you get none that are
even close. Most of us are somewhere in the middle, so its important to
apply every time for things you're interested in. When I got the RIS
job I think it was the 3rd time I applied. Good luck to everyone.

So enough of the infomercial .sorry it was a bit OT. I'll try to post
something closer to home if I can.
