I don't think I've bothered with distribution packages for the codecs
since leaving Mandriva.  Just get the latest binary codec pack from
http://www.mplayerhq.hu and extract to /usr/lib/win32.

I agree about having them transcoded to a more universal format.  The
first step to knocking MS down is to stop everyone from using their
hideous file formats.
