They use flash because their web designer thought it was "cool". They
don't quite get the fact that it locks out some groups of people.
* Those who cannot figure out how to install software
* Those who are on platforms that do not support Flash
* Those who are on processors that do not support Flash.
There is not an "official" flash version for 64-bit processors. (Even if
you are on Windows.)
They don't care about the fringe users (which they consider
non-Windows/Mac users to be). They don't think about the 64-bit users.
And they figure if you are smart enough to go to the NASA site, you are
smart enough to install Flash.
BTW, installing Flash on Linux is pretty easy these days. Not a bit deal.
They have RPMs downloadable from Adobe's site. Windows users have to
install it themselves as well. No big deal.
There are a whole bunch of reasons why people should not run Windows.
Security is only one of them.
