So, what's the problem? The people that need it can get it, and Ubuntu
doesn't put themselves at risk of liability.

apt-get is a "hack"? If that's the case, then perhaps Ubuntu is not the
distribution for you.

If NASA wants to use proprietary content, that's their prerogative. Don't
hold Ubuntu responsible for NASA's failings.

I run Ubuntu, and I have no problems viewing content either.
So, you be happy running Gentoo, and I'll be happy running Ubuntu.
That's the beauty of the system.
