If you have a shell, you can usually install extra drupal modules. Doesn't
require a VPS or colo server for the most part.
The thing I've noticed about Drupal is that it requires _fast_ database
access which most shared environments (dreamhost, I'm looking at you)
don't provide.
Fortunately, caching can drastically increase responsiveness, but it
doesn't help much if you are doing a lot of user-specific content.
