[Eug-lug] Linux hates big monitor

Jared, stop doing it all wrong.  Linux must be coaxed either with
headstrong assuredness, or smooth reassuring suggestions.
Also, you're stuck on Ubuntu?  Linux can do more than Ubuntu :)
Try a few of the latest bootables... if nothing else...

so, it wasn't really clear, then.... you're now using nvidia, NOT ATI,
right?
Check for spelling/typoes by reading the config file *backwards*.
Take a short walk.
