Actually you want PST8PDT, unless you're working on the east coast. (-:

The tzdata file format is portable.  You can read about it in the
tzfile(5) man page.

But I'd encourage you to update the file in the normal way.  Systems
that are behind in their updates are just waiting to be ownz0red.
