It doesn't depend on half the world for installation though it
is an RPM. K3B is great if you use KDE but I don't have a single
KDE package installed at this time. It also has no issues
burning single or dual layer DVDs which was more hassle with
cdrecord and the whole licensing issue. Surely something has
been worked out with all of that. 

It uses it's own burning engine but utilizes some components
from other open source projects and gives credit where due. Also
uses its own burning engine. For making data & audio CD/DVDs I
prefer a gui so I can just drag 'n' drop what I want into a
list. I still use cdrecord for ISO's though.
