Do you have an i586 Mepis LiveCD? If you boot it, what driver does
gphoto2 say it's using for the camera?
Another thing to check: right after you plug in the camera cable,
take a look at dmesg's output. Do the USB drivers identify it?

The motherboard probably isn't the culprit for camera access, unless
USB is totally b0rked. Are other USB devices working?
A new motherboard is $100. (In my imagination, $100 is about ten
minutes' worth of a retired lawyer's disposable income. (-: )
