[Eug-lug] OT: Looking for suggestions for broadband (in Eugene)

A very good friend of mine has subscribed to HughesNet and has consistently regretted it. For the most part, he was getting near or better performance with his dial up. The set up cost is exorbitant. I believe the total cost from zero to working internet connection was around $2000.00. The tech support has been lousy. Speaking of bandwidth throttling, the last time he complained long enough and hard enough about poor service, a "supervisor" at HughesNet told him that the issue would be resolved at which point he received the 1.5 mbps down that they had promised him for about half an hour. Now he is pulling typically pulling less than .5 mbps down. Also, beware of modems that support NAT. We had a double NAT problem between his HughesNet modem and his Buffalo wireless router. We were able to resolve the problem pretty quickly but we was without access to https or ssl sites until I was able to reconfigure his router for him.

So is HughesNet the only other satellite service in this area ? Anyone have
info on them as to quality of service in this area. Basically just email
(pop/smtp) and web surfing is needed. But if HughesNet is anywhere near as
bad as Starband, will stay with dial-up.
