Should work fine. Think VMware depends on /proc/bus/usb being mounted..
mount -t usbfs none /proc/bus/usb
See if that changes anything

Most Sony players that I've dealt with that "support" mp3 convert from
mp3 into their proprietary format for playback. I did get lucky one time
with a little 1G mp3 player which just obfuscates the mp3 and uses it's
own container format.. not use some crazy DRM scheme.
