What version of VMware / Linux are you using? Depending on that, there may
be some fiddling, but I have yet to a USB device that I was unable to get
going in VMware, inluding oddball media players.

If your version of VMware is older, try the beta of Workstation 6 while it's
still free, that might ease things and at least buy you some time. The USB
support in it is quite good.
