Our current boxes from HP are R300 based as well, and you are correct, they
generally work fine with the free driver. Unless you want / need to do even
the lightest 3D. I'm talking rendering OOo presentation effects and goofy
screensavers, not heavy-lifting by any stretch. In those situations (which
are common amongst the people who will be using these machines) the free
driver doesn't allow sufficient performance for those to work well. The
proprietary driver on the other hand works OK for 3D, but does terribly with
video overlays and the like. For example, running and RDP session or VMware
using the closed driver resulted in really nasty visual artifacts and
generally dodgy results. So either way there are relatively common "corner
cases" where one or the other falls down and I'm not able to utilize 100% of
the functionality of the hardware, which is a bummer. With Nvidia or Intel
hardware, I can achieve that 100% functionality with the onboard chipset.
