There are tools out there to allow you to upload old mail to GMail. Not
sure this resolves the issue for you or not, but it is an option.

You can have GMail get mail from other accounts. When you do this you
can have it respond from the same address the mail was sent to. This is
in the settings form.

Other than that, I don't know what to tell you. I'm not aware of a
'free' IMAP client. I know some pay providers will supply IMAP, but that
is it.
