Thanks for those great suggestions.  Unfortunately I
was unable to work on them at the location today but
hopefully be able to bring in the box thursday and see
if we can iron out smbmnt, as I suspect it will need
to be addressed even if I do go with backuppc as a
"more elegant, manageable way" to achieve the nightly
grabs.  

BTW, I found backuppc, selectable in the Synaptic
Package Manager on an Ubuntu6.10 server and installed
it.  Have launched the web interface and am studying
its attributes.  Pretty wild!  Looks like it is
especially powerful as an mail backup utility.
