Might make a difference whether you use the front-panel or back-panel USB
ports --
echoing what Mr. O said, I've seen strange issues with USB on the Via mobo's
as well;
some to the point where touching the front-panel USB port (say, beginning to
insert a thumbdrive or cable!)
hard-rebooted the system. Thought something was not grounded correctly, but
have seen that on a number
of systems, along with non-reboot problems of usability. I'm sure not all
are doomed, though :)
