Personally,  I've had good luck with Fujitsu (Lasted 5 years before
being set aside with useless battery and CD Burner that wouldn't burn),
HP, IBM, and Toshiba (My dad still has a couple of old Toshiba 286
Luggables which are in good working ourder.  These things work for the
long haul).  Bad luck with Dell (3 keyboard replacements before it
finally died), Compaq (Screen gone bad within months) and Sony (Ethernet
JACK snapped off Motherboard).

These days for an inexpensive laptop I'd buy Toshiba or HP on sale at
Fry's and get a decent extended warranty to go with it.  For pricier
notebooks, you really can't go wrong with the upper line of Thinkpads.
They're tough as anything with a sub $10k pricetag.
