I'll chime in and say that I wasted a lot of time messing with raid only
to figure out that it wasnt worth the time invested... I did the same
thing you did (I even got the board at newegg...) then after having
trouble with the sis180 onboard raid (which did work fine in windows
(the one day i had windows on that computer), but not in linux... I got
a pci raid controller... got it working, and tested things out, and
determined that I wasted a lot of time for very little, and removed the
raid card, and use the drives as regular drives...
