Canonical is already setting the stage to be able to sell commercial
software to the Linux Desktop
(see http://packages.ubuntulinux.org/dapper/x11/app-install-data-commercial )

if I were in Mr. Shuttleworth's shoes I'd be looking at cutting
distribution/development deals with one or more of the following
companies:
Google
Oracle
ESRI
CATIA/Dassault
Autodesk
SAS
Adobe

Where Canonical would provide consulting and training in porting and
packaging their software and provide a direct sales channel for
individuals/small businesses.

If you're a small to midsized firm in one of the markets served by
that type of software a vendor who can offer platform level support at
a discount over Microsoft based solutions is going to look very
attractive. Particularly if they can offer a complete "company themed"
desktop experience.
