One shortcoming of the survey is that you are lumping things from
different categories together. Desktop environments like KDE and GNOME
provide a lot of behind the scenes infrastructure and can be used with
a number of different window managers.

That said GNOME + Metacity are intended to work together and do quite
well at matching my work style (all four workspaces filled, mostly
with terminals and browsers, in some cases carrying weeks old ssh
sessions) as well as handling some basic amenities.
